Appe
/paniyaram is famous sauth indian delicacy.It's mainly made from rice
and lentils but there are many variations to appe. Like appe can be
made from different ingredients and and different taste too. For
making appe as a desert suagr/jaggery as a sweetnar and dry fruits
used.
For
savory appe salt,chili and choice of vegetables can be used .I like
sweet as well as savory appe.
Tha
circular shape of this white beauties is most fascinating things for
kids. While playing also they can grab and gallop few.My kids enjoy
eating appe and I make it often with different ingredients.
Following
is savory appe recipe with onions and coriander. I have used
fermented batter of rice and urad dal(Same as that of idali/dosa
batter) for making appe.I often make appe using grated vegetables
like carrot,radish , beet root and cabbage as a nutritious
ingredients.
Special
appe pan is necessary for making appe as shown in below pic. These
appe pan are easily available at utensils stores. Non stick appe pan
need very less oil or no oil for making appe so prefer non stick
pans.

time : 1 hr
Ingredients
:
- Rice 2 cups
- Urad dal /black gram 1 cups
- Salt as per taste
- Water
- Onions 2 finely chopped
- Coriander leaves
- Green chili 4 finely chopped
- Methi seeds 1 tb Spoon
- Oil 2 tb Spoon
Directions
To Cook:
- For making appe batter:Soak dal and rice in enough water separately for 10 to 12 hrs.
- Grind dal and rice in grinder separately to get coarse paste .
- Combine dal and rice paste and keep aside for 10 to 12 hours for fermentation .
- FOR MAKING APPE :Take fermented mixture of dal and rice add enough water,salt ,finely chopped onions,chili and coriander in it and mix well.
- Grease appe pan with 1 tea spoon of oil.
- Pour batter in appe pan and cover appe pan using its lid .
- Cook on low flame for 5 to 6 min.Turn appe for roasting to other side with spoon and roast on both sides.
- Appe are ready and can be served with any chutaney of choice.
