How to make khichadi- type of rice
Khichadi is extremely popular one pot meal .Its made up of rice ,lentils ,variety of vegetables and selected spices. It tastes yummy and takes very less time and ingredients to cook. I like khichadi and always make it when I feel tired or lazy of cooking complete meal.
Any of the lentils toor daal, moong daal , masoor daal, chana daal or mix of lentils can be used in khichadi. Which lentils to use is dependent on people eating khichadi, As while making khichadi for baby ,infant use only moong daal as its very easy to digest. Same is case for making khichadi for sick person.Moong daal is easier to digest than other lentils so it is used mostly for making khichadi.
I like khichadi most with rice and toor daal combination.While making spicy khichadi use spices like whole red chilies ,black pepper and cinnamon sticks. Khichadi tastes yummy without using any spices as well.It is served with onion raita/ any choice of raita or simply with curd, papad and pickle.

Cooking time :35 min
  • Rice 2 cup
  • Moong daal 1/2 cup
  • Green chili 1
  • Tomatoes 1
  • Onion 1
  • Coriander leaves small bunch finely chopped
  • Chili powder 1/4 tea spoon
  • Garlic paste /grated 1/2 tea spoon
  • Curry leaves 5-6
  • Mustard seeds 5
  • Cumin seeds 5
  • Turmeric powder 1/4 tea spoon
  • Oil 2 tb spoon
  • Salt as per taste
  • Water 5 cups
Directions To Cook:

  1. Wash rice ,lentils with water and keep it aside.
  2. Pour oil in pressure cooker and add mustard seeds ,cumin seeds and asfoetida.
  3. After crackling seeds add garlic paste in oil.
  4. Add chopped onions in oil and saute till onions gets translucent.
  5. Add curry leaves ,chopped tomatoes while stirring.
  6. When tomatoes become mushy and start leaving oil add washed rice and lentil mixture in it.
  7. Stir khichadi well to mix all ingredients.
  8. Add salt, turmeric powder ,chili powder ,cumin powder ,water and mix well.
  9. Cover with pressure cooker lid and cook khichadi for 2 -3 whistles .
  10. Switch off gas and let it cool for 10 more minutes before opening lid.
  11. khichadi is ready .Serve with curd or raita of choice.
